When the world’s seventh largest shipping company, the Korean company Hanjin Shipping, went bankrupt, it sent the transportation and global supply chain industries scrambling to protect their cargo. It’s estimated there are around 400,000 containers (the total capacity of the Hanjin fleet is estimated at 600,000 TEUs) with goods that are stuck on board the Hanjin ships. Hurricane Hermine has deepwater seaports in the southeastern U.S. bracing for severe weather, causing the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) to close its facilities in Savannah and Brunswick, according to an alert issued by American Shipper. The Jacksonville Port Authority may shut down operations at all Jaxport terminals Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, as well. The National Weather Service upgraded Hurricane Hermine earlier today from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane. Hanjin Shipping Officially Sunk, Declared Bankrupt February 16, 2017 A South Korean court on Friday pulled the plug on Hanjin Shipping Co., declaring it bankrupt and ordering the liquidation of a company that has led the country’s shipping industry for the past four decades. The bankruptcy comes five months after the company, which was once one of the largest container-shipping lines in the world, filed for court receivership under heavy debt.
